Finding a good lawyer to support your startup journey is one of the keys to succeeding. A lot of tech companies drop the ball on their legal agreements and don’t understand the impact that this has until they start to raise a Series A or other round of investment that requires proper due diligence. A good lawyer will help you get on top of this early and save you some pain in the future.

Paula Natasha Chavez, IP Strategy US & AU Lawyer

I have substantial experience in drafting and prosecuting software and AI (and machine learning) focused patent applications. My client base, including employers, is in the technology sector. For example, while living in France over seven years, I was solely a contractor for Motorola Mobility. For Motorola, I wrote two to three patent applications per month on its mobile technology and attended to due diligence matters relating to those assets. Attached to my CV is a sample list of patents that I wrote for Motorola.

I have held six in-house positions at technology companies. Most recently, for WiseTech Global, a SaaS-logistics provider, over a year, I built an Australian patent portfolio of twenty-one originally drafted patent applications and received early grants on many. For Silicon Controls, a remote asset management provider, I built its global patent and trade mark portfolio to include several dozen assets. For Locata, a terrestrial GPS provider, I revived a global patent portfolio of one hundred assets.

My in-house experience has been with technology companies. More recently, at Licella Holdings, a pre-treatment biofuel producer and at NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI), I reviewed, drafted and negotiated various licensing and R&D agreements, including for software, and managed complex legal matters and projects.

I am an IP generalist with a strong background in software patenting. I have broad experience across all bandwidths of the IP spectrum. I can advise on moral rights, consumer laws, licensing, to name a few. For example, early on I successfully managed patent litigation matters. I love to learn and figure things out. I enjoy challenging work.
